☆ Personality

Yanhe’s official profile states “her short hair makes her look neat and tidy, but her actual personality is very diverse: she can be cheerful and handsome, or fresh and gentle”. She is typically depicted as sporty and slightly tomboyish while still maintaining a girlish charm. When around other members, she acts mature and with a cool head.

Yanhe was not given a backstory, and has no official age. At one point, her age was listed 17 on Shanghai Henian’s website, but this was shortly removed.

During her 10th anniversary livestream, Yanhe referred to herself as A-He. Using “A-” at the beginning of a name is a term of endearment in Chinese. Other VSINGER characters have since adopted calling her this.

☆ Brief History

In 2012, after the first design contest for VOCALOID CHINA PROJECT, a second design contest was held to determine the design of a second Chinese VOCALOID. A voice provider had already chosen, and a clip of her singing the song 茉莉花 / Mo Li Hua, as well as a talking sound clip, was present on the contest page to guide artists' designs. While the previous contest had runner ups become promotional characters and later get voicebanks of their own, only the winning design would receive recognition and become a VOCALOID.

The winning design as picked by fan voting, named Yanhe, was drawn by MQ. Very few elements changed between the contest design and Yanhe’s release design for the VOCALOID3 engine on July 11th, 2013. Yanhe was the second Mandarin Chinese VOCALOID to be released, and she received many duets with Tianyi in her first two years of release due to these two voicebanks being the only ones available for the language.

VOCALOID5 updates were announced for Tianyi, Yanhe, and Ling when the engine was released to the public in 2018. In 2021, the corresponding updated designs for each girl were posted on their respective Weibo accounts. Fans disliked these designs, and they were reworked over the year. All three V5 voicebanks released in 2023— the physical versions of the voicebanks are notably missing the designs and aren't in a box and CD like typical VOCALOID releases, instead opting to put their name and logo on a USB drive.

Yanhe has always been a popular VSINGER character, though over the years, Ling and Longya have surpassed her in total number of followers on Weibo and Bilibili.

☆ Trivia & Fan Culture

She is the only VSINGER character without a mascot character. Many fans depict her with rabbits— particularly the artic hare, known for its long legs— which has been acknowledged by Shanghai Henian on many occassions (for example, a rabbit was on Yanhe's 10th Birthday cake design).

For a short period of time after Ling's first reveal as a VOCALOID, Yanhe received new backstory that revealed she was an alien/angel of music similar to Tianyi. However, this new backstory was quickly scrapped due to poor fan feedback.

In the earlier days of VSINGER, when their social media posting was far more lax, both Yanhe and other characters would often comment on and highlight how long and beautiful Yanhe's legs were. One example of this that's easier to find today is Tianyi praising Yanhe's legs during a talking segment in VSINGER LIVE 2017.

The first VSINGER character to ever appear live in an official concert organized by Shanghai Henian was Yanhe, for the collaborative concert with SeeU called "The first or the last". The songs 心之光 / Light of the Heart and 刀剑春秋 / The Age of Sword and Blade were made as part of this concert's promotional contest and were its winners— the grand prize for the Producers were fully paid flights to Korea to watch Yanhe perform the songs live.

Yanhe has had her name stylized in two ways over the years - YANHE/Yanhe and YAN HE/Yan He. Though Shanghai Henian has pushed for her name to be stylized as “Yan He” within the last couple of years, the western fanbase is most familiar with “Yanhe”, so she will be referred to as such here.

Seira Ryu, Yanhe's voice provider, is bilingual in Japanese and Chinese.
