  • ☆ Personality

Luo Tianyi is described as “a sentimental, gentle, and delicate girl who is gentle enough to shed tears for others, but also strong enough to never give up despite setbacks” on her official profile. She can be childish at times and isn’t the smartest, but is extremely friendly and loving.

To promote her VOCALOID3 release, a number of animated shorts were created involving Tianyi and the rest of her companions. Tianyi’s backstory in these shorts is that she is an angel of music sent to Earth to spread music around the world. She deeply admires all VOCALOID that came before her and wants to follow in their footsteps, connecting VOCALOID and human beings. This backstory concept isn’t used much in current day, but some references to it still exist (continuing to keep her angel wing in her designs, fans calling her their angel).

Another aspect of Tianyi’s personality is her love of food. This began as a headcanon adopted by her fans after the song 千年食谱颂 / A Millennial Menu of China was released in 2012, in which Tianyi describes a large amount of Chinese cuisine and eats it all. Her company later made it a key part of her character, and Tianyi will frequently talk about yummy foods she’s eaten on Weibo or at events.

    ☆ Brief History

In 2011, a contest under the name VOCALOID CHINA PROJECT was held to determine the design of China’s first VOCALOID. Chinese VOCALOID fans could submit their own designs to be chosen by Shanghai Henian— the first place winner would become a VOCALOID while the runner ups would be their promotional companions.

The winning entry of the contest was drawn by MOTH, with a design for a young girl named Yayin Gongyu. Illustrator ideolo was brought in to refine this design, and her name was changed to a more typically Chinese sounding name— Luo Tianyi. After this refinement was complete, promotion began, and Tianyi was released for the VOCALOID3 engine on July 12th, 2012. A Japanese voicebank for Tianyi was planned to coincide with Yanhe’s VOCALOID3 release in 2013, but was ultimately scrapped with little elaboration.

In 2016, an update for Tianyi for the VOCALOID4 engine was announced to be in production. Her updated design for this voicebank was shown at Firefly ACG Festival. However, fans disliked this redesign as it lacked key elements of Tianyi's V3 design, such as her flower and stockings. Shanghai Henian would later say this would not be her final design, and eventually the entire design was changed. At VSINGER LIVE 2017, Tianyi performed using her Chinese V4 voicebank, as well as sang the Japanese song 極楽浄土 / Gokuraku Jodo with members of Garnidelia. Shanghai Henian announced a few days later that her previously canceled Japanese voicebank from 2013 was back in development— this would release the next year, a few months after her Chinese V4 update released.

VOCALOID5 updates were announced for Tianyi, Yanhe, and Ling when the engine was released to the public in 2018. In 2021, the corresponding updated designs for each girl were posted on their respective Weibo accounts. Fans disliked these designs, and they were reworked over the year. All three V5 voicebanks released in 2023— the physical versions of the voicebanks are notably missing the designs and aren't in a box and CD like typical VOCALOID releases, instead opting to put their name and logo on a USB drive.

Tianyi is the most popular character of VSINGER, with over 4 million followers on Bilibili and 3.8 million followers on Weibo. Over the years, she has become a cultural icon for youth/otaku culture, appearing at numerous events such as Bilibili and CCTV (China National Television) New Years’ celebrations, the Beijing Olympics, Bilibili Macrolink, and more.

Tianyi has also had an extensive number of promotional collaborations with companies such as MiHoYo, Bandai Namco, KFC, Sony Music and Sony Pictures, and Disney, as well as a number of performances alongside real musicians, singers, Vtubers, and other VOCALOID.
